Surgical Abortion
What's the difference
between a Non-surgical and Surgical Abortion?
What
to Expect
You will need to plan to spend approximately 2-3 hours in our office.
As soon as you walk through our doors you will be greeted by our
staff. Your next step is to have an ultrasound to determine the
precise length of pregnancy. You will then receive lab work (blood
pressure, pulse, temperature, hemoglobin, and Rh typing). A caring
member of our staff will explain each step to you.
After your lab work is completed, you will have a confidential
counseling session, and if you choose, family and friends are welcome
to participate. Your counselor will discuss with you the procedure
and the sedation you will receive, as well as review aftercare instructions
and answer any questions you may have.
Our counselors are well trained to tailor each session to the specific
needs of the patient. During their sessions, our patients are counseled
individually concerning their decision, options and feelings towards
abortion. The counseling session is designed as a time to exchange
information and express any concerns or feelings you might be experiencing.
Your counselor will also be able to discuss birth control options
with you at this time. Birth control options include the pills,
ring, or Depo-Provera injections.
Our
Center Director will walk with you to the surgical area, where you
will change into a paper gown and socks (that we ask you to bring
from home). You will have an opportunity to discuss any questions
you have with the doctor. Prior to the surgical abortion procedure,
you will have twilight sedation. You will be awake but relatively
unaware of discomfort during the procedure. The surgery is a very
safe and simple procedure and lasts only a few minutes.
Afterward,
you will be brought into our recovery room where our nurses will
care for you. You will be given the necessary prescriptions and
if you choose, a method of birth control, to take home. Patients
who are Rh Negative will receive an injection of Rhogam before leaving.
You will spend approximately 30-60 minutes in the recovery room,
or until you feel you are feeling like you'd like to leave the facility.
All of us at Presidential Women's Center would like to thank you
for placing your trust in us for your reproductive healthcare.
